GAF Roofing Company in Los Angeles: What to Know First
We’re an independent GAF roofing company in Los Angeles, and we repair and replace GAF shingle roofs across the LA basin every week. Most GAF roof repairs in Los Angeles run between $425 and $1,850 depending on what failed, and we give you a written price before any work starts so there’s never a surprise on the invoice. If you own a home with GAF Timberline, GAF Royal Sovereign, or any other GAF line and something’s off, call (213) 521-8272 and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a repair or something bigger.
Grant Whitlock grew up in Eagle Rock and has spent the better part of two decades working on roofs across Los Angeles, from flat torch-down decks in the Valley to clay tile on hillside bungalows in Silver Lake. He’s seen just about every way a GAF roof can fail in this climate, and he’d rather talk you out of spending money you don’t need to spend than close a job that isn’t the right call. If you’re a homeowner who wants to know exactly who’s coming to your door before they arrive, this page is for you.
How GAF Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
GAF makes a solid shingle, but every product line has its patterns. Here’s what we actually see on Los Angeles roofs, line by line, and what we do about it.
- GAF Timberline HDZ / Timberline UHDZ – granule loss and wind creasing. Timberline is GAF’s most common architectural line in LA, and after years of sun exposure, the asphalt layer oxidizes and sheds granules. You’ll see them collecting in gutters or at downspout elbows. The bigger issue we see is wind creasing along the nail line, especially on roofs installed before the HDZ’s LayerLock strip became standard. The fix is usually sectional replacement, matching the shingle color and weathering as closely as possible, not a whole re-roof.
- GAF Royal Sovereign (3-tab) – cracking along the adhesive strip. Royal Sovereign is a discontinued 3-tab line still on thousands of older LA homes. The self-seal strip dries out faster than the shingle itself, and once it cracks, the shingle starts to flutter in Santa Ana winds. We replace the torn shingles and re-adhere the course above and below; the alternative is letting a small failure turn into a wind-tear domino effect.
- GAF Timberline Solar (formerly Decotech) – flashing failures at the光伏 mounting points. This is a newer line, but when it fails, it’s rarely the shingle itself. The penetrations and mounting brackets are the weak point, and a gap in the flashing at the roof-to-panel junction lets water track under the shingle course. We reseat the brackets, replace the flashing collars, and reseal with a roofing-grade sealant rated for LA’s UV load.
- GAF Camelot / Slateline – algae streaking and edge curling at the rake. Camelot and Slateline are the heavier architectural and shingle-slate look lines; algae isn’t a product defect, but the moisture that Cladosporium and Gloeocapsa magma need to grow on east-facing and tree-shaded Los Angeles slopes shortens the shingle’s life. Curled edges at the rake happen when the roof deck’s edge gets hot and the shingle’s reinforcement isn’t enough to hold its shape. We’ll clean the growth, inspect the rake, and replace the curled shingles before they snap.
- GAF Timberline with Deck-Armor / WeatherWatch underlayment – short-nailing at the ridge. We don’t often see the underlayment itself fail; what fails is the installation. Short nails or overdriven nails at the ridge line let entire ridge cap sections come loose after a few seasons. We pull the cap, inspect the nail pattern, and re-nail to code before reattaching.

Our GAF Roofing Company Process
Every GAF job we run follows the same order. It’s not a proprietary secret; it’s just the right way to work so you’re not guessing what’s happening on your own roof.
- 1
You call, a person answers. No voicemail tree. We take your address, what you’re seeing, and whether you have photos. We’ll tell you honestly if it sounds like an emergency or something that can wait a few days.
- 2
We confirm who’s coming to your door. Before the technician heads out, you get their name and photo. They arrive in a clean, marked uniform and present a photo ID badge at the door. That’s the Threshold Verified standard, and it’s non-negotiable.
- 3
Diagnostic walk on the roof. The tech identifies the shingle line, checks the failure point, and looks at surrounding courses for hidden damage – flashing, decking, underlayment, the works. You get the findings in plain English, not contractor shorthand.
- 4
Written price, then a decision. Before any work starts, you get a written line-item price. We’ll tell you whether OEM GAF shingles make sense for the repair or whether a quality aftermarket match from Owens Corning or CertainTeed will hold up just as well. The choice is yours.
- 5
The repair, tested. We make the fix, re-seal where it matters, and run a water test on the affected area before we leave. If the repair fails within 365 days, the second visit is free.
- 6
Cleanup and documentation. We strip our fasteners and debris, walk the property with a magnet, and leave you with a written guarantee that covers the repair for 365 days.

AfterWhat GAF Roofing Company Costs in Los Angeles
Here’s what GAF roofing work in Los Angeles actually costs, based on the jobs we’ve priced across the basin over the last few seasons. These are ranges, not promises, because every roof is different.
| Job Type | Typical Los Angeles Range | What Moves the Price |
|---|---|---|
| Single shingle replacement (any GAF line) | $425 – $650 | Roof pitch, accessibility, shingle availability |
| Flashing repair at chimney or wall | $650 – $1,250 | Flashing material, decking condition underneath |
| Wind-damaged section (binders of torn shingles) | $850 – $1,850 | Number of courses, slope, color matching |
| Ridge cap replacement | $525 – $1,100 | Linear feet of ridge, hip count |
| Full GAF re-roof (composition shingle on a typical 1,800 sq ft LA house) | $14,500 – $24,000 | Decking replacement, underlayment choice, tear-off vs overlay |
Two things consistently drive the cost: whether the roof deck underneath is still sound, and whether we’re matching a discontinued GAF color – sometimes the nearest match comes from a different brand like Owens Corning or CertainTeed. We’ll show you the line items before you decide anything. Call (213) 521-8272 for a free estimate on your GAF roof.
Why Los Angeles Homeowners Call Mercer Roofing Co Los Angeles for GAF Work
A roof should be the last thing on your mind – let’s keep it that way. That’s the whole reason we built Mercer Roofing Co Los Angeles the way we have.
Every repair we do – including GAF repairs – carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right within a year, we make it right. That’s written down, not implied. Every technician we dispatch is background-checked, identity-verified, and badged before they step onto your property. You’ll know their name and face before they knock. And when you call, a live human answers, 24/7, not a call-back service. We also service Owens Corning and CertainTeed roofs, so if your GAF repair needs a color match that’s been discontinued, we have options without compromising the look. As an independent GAF service provider, we answer to you – not to a manufacturer’s quota.
FAQs
A repair done by a contractor – including us – can affect the warranty on the specific shingles repaired, but an independent GAF roofing company in Los Angeles won’t void the entire GAF warranty on the rest of the roof. We keep repair records and photos so you have documentation if a warranty claim ever comes up. Call (213) 521-8272 and we’ll walk you through what your specific warranty covers.
Most GAF repairs in Los Angeles are scheduled within a few days of your call, and if the roof is actively leaking, we’ll tell you what to do to minimize damage while you wait. We don’t promise same-day service on every job, but we do promise a straight answer about timing when you call.
We’ll price both OEM GAF shingles and quality aftermarket matches from brands like Owens Corning or CertainTeed. For newer GAF lines like Timberline HDZ, OEM usually makes sense. For discontinued lines like Royal Sovereign, a close aftermarket match often looks better than a mismatched OEM bundle. You decide based on the written quote.
If the damage covers more than a third of the roof, or if the decking under the shingles is soft, replacement usually costs less in the long run than patching. If it’s isolated damage, repair is almost always the better call. We’ll tell you which one you’re in when we inspect, and we’ll put the reasoning in writing. Call (213) 521-8272 for an honest assessment.
We work on GAF composition shingle lines and refer out for GAF’s specialty metal and tile systems when the job calls for a specialist. If you’re not sure what you have, describe it to us on the phone and we’ll tell you straight.
