CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CertainTeed ridge vent systems throughout Los Angeles, with most installations running between $550 and $1,200 depending on roof length, existing decking condition, and whether the old vent needs full removal. The job typically takes one day, and we carry the common CertainTeed profiles on our trucks, so there’s no second trip while someone orders parts. Most owners discover their ridge vent has failed the same way: a spike in attic heat that starts pushing into the upstairs hallway, or water stains near the peak after a heavy rain. If you’re reading this, you probably already suspect something changed up there.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
CertainTeed makes three ridge vent families that appear on Los Angeles roofs more than any others: the Filtered Ridge Vent (the classic fabric-wrapped profile), the HighFlow Ridge Vent (wider external baffle, higher airflow rating), and the RidgeFlex series, which is more common on tile and shake installations. Each one spans roughly 10 feet per section and mates to a specific slot width cut into the roof decking, and that’s where we see the most install mistakes. A Filtered Ridge Vent needs a 2-inch slot; a HighFlow wants a 3-inch slot. If the slot is cut wrong, the vent will never move the air it’s rated for, and no amount of shingle overlap will fix it.
We use CertainTeed OEM vent material when the roof already has a CertainTeed shingle system or when the homeowner wants the manufacturer’s warranty to stay clean. There are quality aftermarket equivalents that match the airflow ratings, and we’ll lay out the honest difference in cost and coverage before you decide. Our crews also work with GAF and Owens Corning ridge vent systems, so if your roof has a mixed-brand history, we can tell you what’s actually compatible.

Signs Your CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Attic heat in the upper hallway or bedrooms. A working ridge vent pulls hot air out as it rises. When the vent gets clogged with dust, broken down shingle granules, or old bird nests, that heat stays trapped and starts bleeding into the living space below.
- Water stains near the peak on the ceiling or upper walls. Most leaks at the ridge aren’t the vent itself, they’re the nails backing out of the ridge cap shingles or the vent coming loose at the ends where it meets the roofing felt.
- Visible lifting or separation of the vent material. LA sun does a number on plastic and fabric vent parts. After 8 to 10 years, the external baffle can warp and pull away from the decking, leaving a direct path for rain driven by Santa Ana winds.
- Shingle granules collecting in the gutter directly below the ridge. That’s usually the ridge cap shingles wearing faster than the rest of the field, often because the vent underneath isn’t supporting them evenly anymore.
- You can hear wind whistling through the attic on gusty days. CertainTeed vents have internal baffles that should block wind-driven rain while letting air escape. When those baffles crack, you’ll hear it first.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, a straight CertainTeed ridge vent replacement on a standard single-story home with a 30- to 40-foot ridge line lands between $550 and $850. Two-story roofs, steeper pitches, and tile or shake decks push that into the $900 to $1,200 range because of scaffold and safety setup. If the old vent was installed wrong and the decking slot itself needs to be re-cut or repaired, you’re adding roughly $4 to $6 per linear foot for the decking work.
Every quote is written, line-itemed, and handed to you before any work starts. The price includes removing the old vent, inspecting and repairing the surrounding decking as needed, installing the new CertainTeed vent with proper end caps and connectors, and new ridge cap shingles to match. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right within a year, we make it right at no charge. No change orders, no surprises on the back end.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things from the ground. Binoculars work fine: look for visible gaps, lifting, or missing cap shingles along the peak. Inside the attic, look for daylight coming through the ridge slot where it shouldn’t, or dust lines that show air moving where the vent has failed. What we don’t recommend is getting on the roof yourself to inspect or attempt repair. Ridge work means standing at the highest point of the house with tool belts, nail guns, and material that catches wind easily. Most ridge vent failures we see in Los Angeles were made worse by a well-intentioned homeowner who got up there, pulled the old vent off, and couldn’t get a watertight seal back before the next rain. That repair becomes more expensive than the original replacement would have been. Call (213) 521-8272 and we’ll send a technician whose name and photo you’ll have before they arrive.
FAQs
A properly installed CertainTeed ridge vent typically lasts 12 to 15 years in the LA basin, though the sun-facing cap shingles above it may need replacement every 10 to 12 years. Coastal roofs in Playa del Rey or Redondo Beach can see the vent material degrade faster from salt air. Call (213) 521-8272 and we’ll tell you exactly what’s on your roof now and how much life it has left.
Yes, if it’s caught early. End caps that have pulled loose, a short section of separated vent, or a few backed-out nails can often be resecured and resealed for $200 to $350 in Los Angeles. But when the vent material itself is cracked or warped over a long run, patching buys you a season, not a solution. We’ll give you the honest call after one look.
Most single-family homes in Los Angeles take 4 to 6 hours from setup to cleanup. Tile roofs run longer because the cap tiles have to be removed and reset carefully. We’ll give you a window when you book, and the written quote includes the full scope so there’s no time-creep once we’re up there.
We carry the common CertainTeed Filtered and HighFlow profiles in 10-foot sections on our service trucks, along with matching end caps and connectors. If your roof needs a less common RidgeFlex profile or a longer run than we have on board, we can typically have it from our Los Angeles supplier within one business day and we’ll give you a firm install date before we start.
