Tamko Shingle Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Tamko shingle repair in Los Angeles typically runs $350 to $900 installed, depending on how many shingles failed and whether the underlayment or flashing is involved. We stock Tamko-compatible shingles and accessories on our trucks, so most repairs are completed in a single visit. Homeowners usually discover a Tamko shingle problem the hard way: a water stain on the ceiling after a heavy rain, granules collecting in the gutter, or a shingle that’s peeled up enough to spot from the driveway on a sunny afternoon. If you’re reading this because you found one of those signs, here’s what you actually need to know about getting it fixed correctly.
We’re Mercer Roofing Co Los Angeles, an independent roofing contractor. We are not affiliated with Tamko, but we’ve installed and repaired Tamko products across the LA basin long enough to know their product lines and failure patterns well.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To
Tamko makes several residential shingle lines, and the repair approach depends on which one you have. The Heritage series (Heritage, Heritage II, Heritage Premium, Heritage Woodgate) is the most common in Los Angeles neighborhoods. We also regularly work on the Titan XT, Elite Glass-Seal, and the newer StormShield and Lifetime lines.
Here’s the important compatibility detail most homeowners don’t know: Tamko shingles are sold in specific color codes and production lot numbers, and a shingle bought off the shelf at a big-box store may not match the color blend on a roof that’s been weathering for even three to five years. We pull the color code from the original packaging if you have it, or match against Tamko’s current color swatches and account for fade from LA sun exposure. In the stronger sun on the west-facing slopes of homes in Woodland Hills or Sherman Oaks, Tamko’s color variety can fade unevenly, which means a repair that isn’t color-matched carefully will be visible from the street for a long time.
OEM Tamko shingles are always our first recommendation for repairs under 12 years old. For older roofs, or when a specific Tamko color has been discontinued, a quality aftermarket equivalent in the appropriate size (most Tamko residential shingles are metric, not the imperial size used by some other brands) can work, provided it’s matched by an installer who knows the difference.

Signs Your Tamko Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Bare spots or dark patches where granules used to be. This means the protective granule layer has worn away or de-bonded. You’ll see it most often on south and west-facing slopes that get the worst Los Angeles afternoon sun. Without granules, the asphalt layer underneath degrades quickly.
- Shingles curling at the corners or lifting in the middle. This usually signals the adhesive strips have failed. In the temperature swings between LA’s coastal fog and inland heat, the adhesive on older Tamko shingles can dry out and release, leaving the shingle vulnerable to wind. A lifted shingle on a Santa Ana wind day can tear off entirely.
- Granules piling up in gutters or at the base of downspouts. Some granule loss is normal in the first months after installation. If it’s been a few years and you’re still seeing granule buildup, the shingles are wearing faster than they should.
- Water stains on the ceiling or along exterior walls after rain. This doesn’t always mean the shingle itself failed. Often the shingle is fine but the pipe boot or flashing near a valley or wall junction has opened up. A proper repair finds the actual entry point, not just the most obvious damaged shingle.
- Shingles that feel brittle or crack when touched. Once shingles get brittle from age and UV exposure, they can’t be re-sealed. They need replacement. This is most common on Tamko roofs approaching or past the 15-year mark in the Los Angeles sun.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most Tamko shingle repairs we do in Los Angeles fall between $350 and $900 installed. The spread is driven by three things: how many shingles need replacing, whether the underlayment and decking underneath are still sound, and whether the flashing around chimneys, vents, or walls is involved. A straightforward repair of 10 to 20 shingles on a simple two-plane roof in the San Fernando Valley typically lands around $400 to $600. If we need to cut out and replace a section of water-damaged decking, or the repair involves Step flashing along a wall, you’re closer to the top of that range.
Every quote includes the shingle materials, nails, sealants, clean-up, and disposal. You get the written price before any work starts. There’s no change order after we begin unless we find something structural that can’t have been seen from the surface, and in that case we’ll show you photos and talk through it before touching anything. Every repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, we come back and do it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do the diagnosis part yourself. From the ground or a ladder placed against the gutter line, you can spot curling, missing granules, and lifted edges with binoculars. What we don’t recommend is climbing onto a pitched roof to replace Tamko shingles yourself. The roof on a two-story Los Angeles home is not a place to discover your ladder is at the wrong angle or the shingle surface is slick with morning dew. Tearing off a damaged shingle the wrong way can also rip the underlayment, and suddenly a $400 repair becomes a $1,400 repair. If you want to check something, check from the ground. If you want it fixed, that’s what we’re here for. We’ll send you the technician’s name and photo before they arrive, and they’ll badge in with photo ID at the door.

FAQs
Tamko’s premium lines like Heritage Premium and Titan XT are rated for extended service, but in Los Angeles sun, the realistic lifespan is 15 to 22 years depending on shade, slope orientation, and how well the attic ventilation was done. South-facing roofs in the Valley age faster than shadier ones in the hills. Call (213) 521-8272 and we can give you an honest assessment of where your roof sits.
Yes, if the surrounding shingles are still sound and the color can be closely matched. We’ll never push you toward a full replacement if a section repair will hold. We only recommend larger work when the remaining shingles are too brittle to seal properly or the underlayment has begun to fail. Estimates are free, and you’ll get the written price before anything is scheduled.
Most repairs are done in a single visit, typically two to four hours for a straightforward shingle section replacement. If flashing or decking work is involved, the visit may run longer or require a return trip for materials. We’ll tell you the time commitment in writing with your quote.
We stock Tamko-compatible shingles and common color options on our trucks. We also work with GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed products when a repair calls for a different brand. If your specific Tamko color isn’t on the truck, we can typically have it matched and sourced within a few days.
