Atlas Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
When Atlas underlayment fails or the decking beneath it has rotted, most Los Angeles homeowners need a repair that runs between $450 and $1,800 depending on how far the damage goes. We stock Atlas-compatible synthetic underlayment and decking repair materials on our trucks, so we can usually handle the tear-out, deck replacement, and new underlayment in a single visit once we’ve seen the roof. You’ll typically find out you need this work the hard way: a leak shows up on the ceiling after a winter rain, or a roofing contractor points out soft decking during an inspection.
Which Atlas Models This Applies To
Atlas underlayment is designed to work across their full shingle lineup, from the Pinnacle Pristine and StormMaster Shake lines to the GlassMaster and Castlebrook series. What matters more than the shingle model is what’s underneath it. Atlas manufactures two main underlayment products we see in the field: Atlas Summit 60, a synthetic underlayment, and their felt-based options for budget-conscious installs. Summit 60 is the one we recommend for re-decking because it holds up to high-heat exposure on LA hillside roofs in Glassell Park and Mount Washington, where felt underlayment bakes brittle in four or five summers. Here’s a compatibility gotcha: if your decking needs replacement, code in Los Angeles now requires you to replace the underlayment at the same time. You can’t reuse old felt, even if it looks intact. And if your home was originally roofed with a cheap aftermarket underlayment instead of Atlas-branded material, that’s often the first thing that failed, not your shingles.

Signs Your Atlas Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Ceiling stains after rain. This usually means underlayment has torn or pulled away from a seam. Water gets under the shingles, follows the decking, and shows up inside. The shingles often look fine from the ground.
- Soft or spongy spots when walked on. If the decking flexes underfoot, the plywood or OSB has absorbed water. In homes near the coast in Playa del Rey, salt air accelerates this rot once moisture gets in.
- Shingles lifting at the edges or corners. When underlayment wrinkles or delaminates, shingles no longer sit flat. You’ll see raised edges along roof lines, especially after Santa Ana winds work their way under.
- Granules in the gutter paired with dark patches on the decking. Worn Atlas shingles let water through to the underlayment, and by the time you see granule loss, the underlayment underneath has likely been doing the real waterproofing work for a while.
- Attic moisture or mildew smell. Underlayment is the roof’s last line of defense before the decking. When it fails, humidity builds in the attic, and older homes in neighborhoods like El Sereno with limited attic ventilation show it first.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, expect to pay between $450 and $1,800 for Atlas underlayment and deck repair. The spread exists because of square footage and how much decking we have to pull up. Here’s the breakdown:
- Small deck repair (one sheet of plywood or less) with new underlayment: $450 – $750
- Medium repair (two to four sheets, ridge or valley area): $750 – $1,200
- Larger deck replacement with full underlayment section: $1,200 – $1,800
Every quote is a written, line-item price before we touch the roof. No change orders, no surprise invoices. The work includes tearing out the failed decking, replacing it with code-compliant plywood or OSB, installing Atlas or equivalent synthetic underlayment with proper overlap, and sealing all penetrations. The repair is covered by our written 365-day guarantee. If it fails within a year, the second visit is free. We’re an independent Los Angeles contractor, not affiliated with Atlas, but we install their underlayment to their spec so your shingle warranty stays valid.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: look for lifted shingles from the ground with binoculars, check your attic for water stains after a rain, and scan the ceiling corners near exterior walls. But pulling up shingles and cutting out decking is not a weekend project. You’re working on a sloped surface with a nail gun, and the decking is structural. One wrong cut into a rafter and you’ve turned a $700 repair into a $4,000 re-roof. There’s also the Los Angeles building code angle: decking replacement in occupied homes requires approved fasteners and proper underlayment overlap, and inspectors do check. If you’re not sure whether you need deck repair or just new underlayment, call us at (213) 521-8272 and we’ll get you a straight answer.
FAQs
Atlas Summit 60 synthetic underlayment is rated for 30 years under normal conditions, but in Los Angeles sun and heat exposure you should plan on 15 to 20 years of real performance before it needs attention, especially on south-facing slopes in the Valley.
Sometimes, yes. If we catch the underlayment failure early and the decking is still solid, we can peel back the affected shingles, patch or replace the underlayment section, and reinstall. Call (213) 521-8272 for an exact quote; estimates are free.
Most Atlas underlayment and deck repairs are done in one day, including tear-out and haul-away. Larger jobs with multiple decking sheets can run into a second morning, and we’ll tell you that before we start.
We keep Atlas Summit 60 and equivalent synthetic underlayment on our trucks, along with decking material and matching fasteners. If we need a specific Atlas shingle to match your existing roof, we’ll source it before we arrive. We also work with GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed materials when that’s the better match for the repair.
If your roof is leaking or your decking feels soft, the fix starts with a phone call. We’ll send a background-checked, badged technician whose name and photo you’ll get before they arrive. The written estimate is free, and the price on paper is the price you pay. Call (213) 521-8272 today and let’s get your roof solid again.
