GAF Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

GAF underlayment and deck repair in Los Angeles typically runs $850 to $2,400 installed, depending on how much decking has rotted and which GAF underlayment product your roof needs. We stock GAF-compatible underlayment on our trucks and can match most GAF shingle and underlayment systems the same week we inspect. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover the problem the hard way: a leak shows up on the ceiling, or a roofing contractor looking at something else lifts a shingle and finds the underlayment has turned to brittle paper after years of Southern California sun.

Here’s the reality we see across Los Angeles every week: your shingles can look fine from the street while the underlayment underneath has failed. The decking below that is quietly softening. By the time water reaches your ceiling drywall, you’re usually looking at deck replacement, not just a patch. That’s why we treat underlayment and deck repair as one job, not two separate line items.

Which GAF Models This Applies To

If your roof carries GAF shingles, the underlayment underneath is almost always a GAF product too. The three we see most in Los Angeles are Deck-Armor, FeltBuster, and Tiger Paw. Deck-Armor is GAF’s premium synthetic breather underlayment, rated for long-term exposure before shingle installation. FeltBuster is their high-traction synthetic, and Tiger Paw is the entry-level fiberglass-reinforced option. Each has different exposure ratings and walkability, which matters on steep Los Angeles hillside roofs.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: GAF’s warranty documentation requires the underlayment to match the shingle system you’re installing. If you have GAF Timberline HDZ shingles going on, GAF’s specs call for Deck-Armor or FeltBuster underneath, not a generic felt. Using the wrong underlayment can void the manufacturer’s wind and algae warranty. We verify what’s currently on your roof and match it to what GAF specifies for your shingle line. We also keep Owens Corning and CertainTeed underlayment on hand for roofs with those shingle brands, but if you have GAF up top, we keep it GAF below.

Signs Your GAF Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing

  • Water stains on ceilings or walls after rain. By the time water shows up inside, it has already passed through the shingles, the underlayment, and the decking. The underlayment has failed, and the deck is likely wet or rotting. This is not a wait-and-see situation.
  • Granules in your gutters. GAF shingles shed granules as they age, but heavy granule loss means the shingle’s protective layer is gone. That exposes the underlayment to direct UV, which breaks down synthetics faster than anything else we see in Los Angeles.
  • Soft spots or visible sagging between rafters. If you can see a dip in the roofline from the ground, or if the roof feels spongy underfoot (which we do not recommend testing yourself), the decking is compromised. This means deck replacement, not just underlayment replacement.
  • Musty attic smell or visible mold on the underside of the roof sheathing. Moisture has been getting through for a while. Even small amounts of trapped moisture in a Los Angeles attic during our humid late-summer months will grow mold fast.
  • Water intrusion around penetrations: vents, chimneys, skylights, and pipe boots. Underlayment fails first at penetrations because that’s where water concentrates. If your leak is near a vent or pipe, the underlayment around it has likely lost its seal, and the deck around the penetration may need to be cut out and replaced.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what you can expect to pay for GAF underlayment and deck repair in Los Angeles. These are real numbers from the jobs we do across the city, from Eagle Rock to Mar Vista:

Scope of Work Installed Price Range (Los Angeles)
Underlayment replacement only (small area, decking intact) $850 – $1,400
Underlayment replacement plus 1-2 sheets of decking $1,200 – $1,900
Underlayment replacement plus 3-6 sheets of decking $1,800 – $2,400
Full deck replacement and re-underlayment (per 100 sq ft) $900 – $1,500

What drives the range: how much decking actually needs to come out, whether we’re working on a steep hillside slope (common in Los Angeles neighborhoods like Mount Washington or Baldwin Hills) that requires extra safety rigging, and whether your GAF shingles can be reused or need replacement too. Every Mercer Roofing job comes with a written price before we start, so the number we quote is the number you pay. No change orders, no surprise line items. And every repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely inspect a few things from the ground or from a ladder you’re confident on: look for missing or lifted shingles, check gutters for excessive granules, and shine a flashlight in the attic for water stains or daylight coming through the sheathing. That’s the extent of what we’d tell a homeowner to do themselves.

What you should not do is get on the roof and start pulling up shingles. Underlayment and deck repair means lifting shingles, cutting out damaged decking, and re-nailing everything in a pattern that won’t leak. Get the nail pattern wrong, skip the right underlayment overlap, or miss a seam, and you’ve created a new leak where there wasn’t one before. Rotted decking is also a fall hazard: it can give way without warning. We bring fall protection, proper tools, and the right GAF-compatible materials. Call (213) 521-8272 and we’ll send someone out to look.
