Owens Corning Ridge Vent Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Owens Corning ridge vent installation in Los Angeles typically runs $18 to $28 per linear foot installed, so a standard 40-foot ridge on a 1,500 to 2,000-square-foot home lands between $720 and $1,120, labor and materials included. We stock Owens Corning VentSure ridge vent and compatible components on our trucks for most single-family homes, so we can usually swap a failing section the same visit. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a ridge section that’s lifted, cracked, or letting rain drip down an interior wall near the peak, or a musty attic smell that shows up in late summer when the marine layer sits over the LA basin for days at a stretch.
Before you spend a dime, one thing worth knowing: Mercer Roofing Co Los Angeles is an independent roofing contractor. We install and service Owens Corning products, but we’re not affiliated with Owens Corning. That matters because we’re free to tell you when a repair will hold and when it won’t, without a factory agenda in the room. Grant Whitlock grew up in Eagle Rock and has spent two decades on LA roofs, and he’d rather talk you out of a job you don’t need than sell you one you do.
Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To
Owens Corning makes three ridge vent lines you’re most likely to have on an LA roof: VentSure (their workhorse, low-profile 4-foot rigid sections), VentSure Pro (slightly taller profile for better exhaust in low-wind conditions), and the older Venture ridge vent, which has been discontinued but still shows up on homes roofed before roughly 2010. If you have an Owens Corning shingle roof installed in the last 15 years, odds are high it has VentSure or VentSure Pro on the ridge.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners hit: the profile height has to match your ridge cap shingles. VentSure is about 5/8 inch tall. VentSure Pro is taller, about 1 inch. If someone swaps in the wrong profile, the cap shingles won’t sit flat and you’ll get wind-driven rain sneaking under the edges. That’s a mistake we see on LA homes more than you’d think, especially after a cheap repair by a handyman who grabbed whatever was on the shelf. When we quote a replacement, we always check the existing profile and match it. We also keep both profiles on the truck, so there’s no second trip.

Signs Your Owens Corning Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Water stains on the ceiling near the peak. A cracked or lifted ridge vent letting rain in from the top is the usual culprit. In Los Angeles, it often shows up after the first real rain of the season, when dried-out plastic has had a full summer of UV exposure to weaken it.
- Musty or stale attic air in summer. Ridge vents work by letting hot air rise and escape. When the vent matrix gets clogged with dust, broken tile granules, or nesting material, your attic stops breathing. The air sits, and it smells like it.
- Visible cracking or warping on the ridge line. LA’s heat is honest about what it does to plastic. After 12 to 15 years, the nylon or PVC matrix on a VentSure can get brittle, especially on roofs with full western sun exposure in the Valley or the west side.
- Cap shingles lifting at the peak. When the nails holding the cap shingles work loose, or the vent underneath shifts, the shingles start to lift. You’ll see it from the street as a slightly uneven ridgeline.
- Higher cooling bills with no other cause. A dead ridge vent means your attic is holding heat. In August, that heat pushes down through your insulation and makes your AC work harder. If your July bill jumped and you can’t figure out why, look up before you blame the thermostat.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a Los Angeles single-family home, installed Owens Corning ridge vent replacement lands between $18 and $28 per linear foot. The range comes down to three things: the profile you need (VentSure vs. VentSure Pro, which costs a few dollars more per section), whether your cap shingles can be reused or need to be replaced, and the roof’s pitch and access. A single-story ranch on a flat lot in Lakewood costs less to work on than a hillside bungalow in Echo Park where the crew has to set up on a sloped driveway.
Every quote we give is a written, line-item price before work starts. You’ll see the cost of the vent sections, any cap shingle replacement, fasteners, and labor, separately. No surprises on the invoice. And every repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the installation fails within a year, we come back and make it right, at no charge. That’s written on every job, not spoken.

Working on a roof ridge means walking the ridgeline, which is not a place for a ladder and a cautious amateur. Falls from roof edges are the most common roofing injury we see, and a ridge is the highest point on the house. We don’t recommend DIY ridge vent work, period. What you can safely do from the ground: look for lifted cap shingles, run a visual check for cracks, and peek into the attic on a sunny day to see if light is coming through the ridge area where it shouldn’t be. That tells you a lot.
Once you suspect the vent has failed, the next step is a professional look. We send a technician whose name and photo we text to you before the visit. They arrive in a marked uniform and present a photo ID at the door. You know exactly who’s walking up the driveway before they knock. Call (213) 521-8272 and a live person will pick up, day or night. If it turns out the vent is fine and something else is causing the problem, we’ll tell you that too. We’re not going to sell you a ridge vent you don’t need.
FAQs
In Los Angeles, an Owens Corning VentSure ridge vent typically lasts 12 to 18 years, with full-sun western and Valley exposures on the shorter end of that range.
UV exposure is the main killer here, not wind. The plastic matrix gets brittle, and eventually a section cracks or the fasteners pull through. If your roof is past the 15-year mark and you’re seeing cracking at the ridge, it may be time to replace the vent even if the shingles still look okay. Call (213) 521-8272 and we’ll take a look and give you an honest assessment, no charge for the estimate.
It depends on the failure, but most ridge vent damage on Owens Corning systems in Los Angeles is handled by replacing the affected sections rather than patching.
If a single 4-foot section is cracked and the surrounding vent is still pliable, we can section it out and replace just that piece. If the whole ridge is brittle from years of UV, a section repair becomes a patch job on borrowed time. We’ll show you what we’re seeing, with photos from the roof, and let you decide with a real number in writing either way.
For most Los Angeles homes, replacing a full ridge vent takes between three and six hours, so it’s almost always a single-day job.
The time depends on the ridge length, whether cap shingles need replacing, and roof access. We’ll tell you the expected window before we start, and you’ll get the final written price before any work begins. No open-ended hourly billing.
We stock Owens Corning VentSure and VentSure Pro ridge vent sections on our trucks, so you don’t need to order anything yourself.
We also carry aftermarket equivalents that meet the same profile specifications for older roofs where the original Owens Corning profile is no longer available. If you’d rather source exact OEM VentSure yourself, that’s fine too, but most homeowners prefer not to deal with supply runaround. We’ll bring what’s needed. Call (213) 521-8272 for a free estimate and a written quote before work starts.
